Psycho Les (born Lester Fernandez) is a Colombian American super producer and most widely recognized as one half of the NYC based, golden era hip-hop group The Beatnuts. Hailing from Queens, New York along with his partner JuJu (Jerry Tineo), they are pioneers of the genre. The two have been producing, rapping and DJ-ing since the late 1980’s. The Beatnuts are also the only Latino members of the infamous Native Tongues collective whose members include De La Soul, A Tribe called Quest and Queen Latifah.
Known solely for their production skills at first, the Beatnuts dropped their debut EP Intoxicated Demons featuring the underground hits “Reign of the Tec” and “No Equal” in the early 1990’s. They would then go on to be most associated with their classic commercial hip-hop singles “Watch Out Now”, “No Escapin’ This” and “Off the Books”in the latter part of the decade.
In addition to his work with The Beatnuts, Psycho Les has produced and collaborated with high profile hip hop artists like Fat Joe, Big Pun, Mos Def, Method Man and so many more. A veteran in the music industry, Psycho Les is still widely sought after for his psycho style productions, beats and features on albums. He recently produced fellow golden era rapper Kool Keith’s “Keith” album and has a few new top secret projects in the works.
