Ace Hotel Brooklyn presents: Tattoo Talk
Friday, May 13 – 7-8:30pm (doors open at 6:30pm)
The Atrium at Ace Hotel Brooklyn

This May, the New Museum Store and Ace Hotel Brooklyn are proud to present a special pop-up tattoo parlor and panel discussion at Ace Hotel Brooklyn featuring renowned artists Jess Chen, Gossamer Rozen, Francis Segismundo, and Amanda Wachob. Each artist will take over the Parlor, one day at a time, and receive clients for a very special session in The Garden. More info here.

In conjunction with the Tattoo Parlor, the creative team at Ace Hotel Brooklyn invited Brooklyn-based tattoo artist Emma Anderson to guide a conversation with the four artists. Together, they will explore their experience working in the various geographies of the tattoo industry, as well as their individual practices and how they choose to incorporate tattooing into their art practice.

About The New Museum x Ace Hotel Brooklyn:

The New Museum is teaming up with Ace Hotel New York and Ace Hotel Brooklyn for an eight-part series that animates our shared interests in discovery and commitment to artistic pursuits. The yearlong lineup activates the hotels with co-curated pop-ups, artist conversations, screenings, and more!

About the artists:

Emma Anderson is a multidisciplinary artist and tattooer. She is also Creative Director of Studio Hart St., an indie video game development studio. Her education and history is in painting and it informs all of the mediums in which she’s involved. Tangled, sweltering non-memories of archways and gas stations. Sticky bits of late sunlight that force your eyes shut. Emma’s work learns from her dreams.

Jess Chen is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in fine arts and graphic design, whose work focuses primarily on her relationship with the natural world. Pushing her work in different directions is an integral aspect of her practice, as she is now exploring her new media, including ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and tattooing.

Gossamer Rozen is a transgender Filipino and Black fine artist and tattooer based in Brooklyn. Rozen has been making art to understand their identity, celebrate their heritage, and examine and connect with the world around them. A graduate from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, their body of work currently explores a variety of media, including tattooing, woodcarving, textile art, soft sculpture, digital media, animations, and clothing design. Rozen believes the slow process of hand sewing, hand carving, tattooing, and machine knitting is meticulous and repetitive, a type of meditation that is integral, if not more important than the finished work itself.

Frances Segismundo is an interdisciplinary tattoo artist whose work reimagines the boundaries between fine art and tattoo craftsmanship. She explores conceptual ideas of our relationship with ourselves through the experience of getting tattooed. Frances works at Yarrow, an artist-run private studio based in Brooklyn. She has had shows with Brooklyn Arts Fellowship, Site: Brooklyn, and Two Thirty-One Projects, and has presented in galleries across London, the Philippines, and Hong Kong.

Amanda Wachob is an interdisciplinary artist who is known for her innovative and conceptual work in the tattoo medium. Her canvases include fruit, leather, linen, and skin. She has done projects with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New Museum, Museum of Arts and Design, Clyfford Still Museum, Rubin Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, and Whitney Museum of American Art. Pioneering the watercolor tattoo movement and actively bridging the gap between tattooing and fine art, Wachob has exhibited her work in galleries and museums worldwide.
