DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to announce the gallery exhibition by our latest Artist in Residence\, Satoko Imazu. “Echoes” will be on view May 1 through July 31. \nDuring her time with us\, Satoko chose the Kyoto Imperial Palace as the central theme of her work — a place deeply rooted in history\, yet very much a part of everyday life for Kyoto’s residents. She was drawn to how different it feels from the Imperial Palace and gardens in Tokyo\, where she usually lives. In Kyoto\, people cycle through the grounds as part of their daily commute\, run as part of their routine\, take walks\, rest and\, on weekends\, gather for baseball games or tennis practice. In some ways\, it felt reminiscent of Central Park to her. \nIncluding the changing scenes along the way during her daily visits to the grounds\, She photographed with a focus on “everyday life\,” a central theme in her ongoing work. \nReception Party: May 1\, 18:30–20:30 (in front of the Gallery)\nSlow Series Photo Workshop: May 2\, from 10:30 (meet in the Lobby) \nFree and open to all. \nSatoko Imazu\nAfter apprenticing under photographer Shingo Wakagi\, Satoko Imazu established her independent practice in 2004. DESCRIPTION:Ryu \nBorn in 1995\, Tokyo. Ryu is a DJ and event organizer. He began his career in Kagoshima and is now active in Tokyo and Osaka\, performing regularly at various DJ bars and clubs.\nHe describes his love for 70s-80s music with DJ\, and his style is centered around Balearic/Nu Disco\, with a wide-ranging repertoire.\nSince 2023\, Ryu has expanded his reach\, performing in several Asian countries\, including Indonesia\, China\, South Korea\, and the Philippines.\nThrough his own organized events\, he has invited key figures from the Asian dance music scene on his own\, such as Munir (Midnight\nRunners)\, Kimoji\, and Romain FX\, fostering a borderless and inclusive community.\nAnd these days his organizational capability has been evaluated\, so he brought Felipe Gordon from Colombia as his first gig in Japan\,\nand YUSEK from France in Osaka.\nNow he is one of the best organizers who invites artists from overseas in young generation in Japan. \n  \n1995年東京生まれのDJ\,　Organizer。\n鹿児島でキャリアをスタートさせ、現在東京・大阪を中心に様々なDJ bar\, clubを拠点に活動する。\n特に70〜80年代の音楽を愛し、Balearic/Nu Discoを軸にジャンル幅広く、且つシームレスに展開していくのが彼のスタイルである。\n2023年以降インドネシアをはじめ、中国、韓国、フィリピンといったアジア諸国をツアーで周り、ファンを着実に増やしている。\n自身のオーガナイズするパーティーでは、Munir (MidnightRunners)、Kimoji、Romain FXといったアジアダンスミュージックシーンにお\nける重要人物を招聘し、そのボーダーレスなコミュニティを拡げている。\nまた直近ではそのオーガナイズ能力が話題を呼び、ジャジーハウスの筆頭Felipe Gordonの初来日ギグやフレンチ・エレクトロのYUKSEK大阪ギグのパーティーメイクも務めた。

DESCRIPTION:As part of Ace Hotel Kyoto’s SLOW SERIES\, we are hosting a Sashiko workshop with artist JunAle.\nSashiko is a traditional Japanese hand-stitching technique used to repair and reinforce fabric\, passed down through generations as a way to extend the life of clothing and textiles.\nIn this workshop\, participants will bring clothing\, bags\, or small textile items and learn basic Sashiko techniques for mending and reinforcement. Materials made from repurposed Ace Hotel Kyoto roomwear will also be available to use.\nItems with holes or damage are welcome\, as well as pieces you simply want to repair\, strengthen\, or give a new look. Upon returning to Japan in 2006\, he began his career as a sportswear designer. While working with cutting-edge materials and functional design\, he also developed a deep interest in traditional craftsmanship passed down through generations. \nSince 2014\, he has focused on the centuries-old Japanese stitching technique known as sashiko\, establishing a unique practice that combines repair and embellishment using only needle and thread on contemporary products such as sneakers and mountain parkas. \nHe became the first artist in the world to apply sashiko stitching to sneaker soles\, expanding the possibilities of the technique into new territory. His work\, which bridges traditional craft and modern products\, has inspired many contemporary creators. \nIn addition to stitching\, he also works with natural dyes such as indigo and persimmon tannin\, hand-dyeing both sashiko thread and the sneakers themselves. From material preparation to final finishing\, his process is rooted entirely in handcraftsmanship. \nBy reinterpreting tradition through a contemporary lens\, he continues to explore and expand the future potential of sashiko. \n  \n1983年、大阪府生まれ。 \n服飾学校でテーラリングを学んだのちロンドンへ渡り、ブランドアシスタントや舞台衣装制作など、多様な現場で経験を積む。2006年に帰国し、スポーツウェアのデザイナーとしてキャリアをスタート。最先端の素材や機能性を扱う一方で、長く受け継がれてきた伝統技術にも関心を抱くようになる。 \n2014年より、数百年続く「刺し子」の技法に取り組み始め、スニーカーやマウンテンパーカーといった現代のプロダクトへ、針と糸だけで補修と装飾を施す独自の表現を確立。 \n世界で初めてスニーカーのソールへ刺し子を施し、刺し子表現の領域を拡張。その実践は、クラフトと現代プロダクトを横断する新たな視点として、多くのクリエイターへ影響を与えている。 \n藍や柿渋など天然染料による染色も行い、刺し子糸やスニーカーそのものを自ら染め上げることで、素材づくりから仕上げまで一貫して手仕事による制作を行っている。 \n伝統に根ざしながらも現代的視点で再構築することで、刺し子の可能性を未来へとつなぐ実践を続けている。 \n  \nConcept of JunAle \nJunAle is a creative artisanal studio led by sashiko artist Jun Sugimae\, dedicated to redefining the boundary between craft and product design. \nSince beginning his sashiko practice in 2014\, Sugimae has focused on reinterpreting traditional techniques through a contemporary lens\, creating new value by connecting disciplines that would not traditionally intersect. \nSASHIKOSNEAKER™ is an art piece that embodies this philosophy. \nThe concept of BORO / SASHIKO / TECH represents three core elements of the practice: continuity\, craftsmanship\, and creativity. Known for his unique style and deep experience\, he communicates his authentic taste through DJing with a focus on Black music. His broad selection and skillful sets have earned him a loyal fanbase. Recently\, he has been active as a DJ at venues like hotels and lounges\, as well as events such as sports tournaments\, weddings\, and banquets. \n2001年よりクラブDJとして活動を開始。独自の世界観と経験をもって、ブラックミュージックを軸にDJを通して伝えるそのセンスは本物で、選曲の幅も広く、彼のプレイを支持する熱狂的なファンも多い。昨今ではホテルやラウンジなどのDJをメインにスポーツの大会、結婚式や宴会など様々な現場にてプレイする。 \nDJ MAHIRO \nBorn in 1999 in Kyoto\, he grew up listening to 80’s and 90’s Black music\, influenced by his parents\, which led him to dive into DJing. \nWith a wide-ranging selection centered around Black music\, he transcends eras and borders\, moving not just bodies but hearts. DESCRIPTION:Kobe-based creamery Harlow is bringing their hand-churned confections to the rooftop beer garden at Mr. Maurice’s Italian this summer. \nScooping since 2017\, Harlow uses high-quality Hokkaido dairy in their ice cream\, accented with all manner of homemade accouterments. They also make a vegan cone we find delicious. The store is known for its deep and wide selection of music genres\, including disco\, psychedelic rock\, new age music\, and house music\, attracting DJs and music enthusiasts from both Japan and abroad. Co-authored the music guidebook “WA B.O.O.G.I.E 1980s Japanese Boogie / Funk / Modern Soul / Fusion” (Space Shower Books) and co-curated a compilation titled “Heisei No Oto (Japanese Left-Field Pop From The CD Age\, 1989-1996)” released by the German record label Music From Memory\, in collaboration with AZ (Revelation Time). DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to present KYOTO\, a solo exhibition by Noritake\, on view from August 1 through October 31. \nDuring his artist residency in Kyoto\, Noritake created a new body of work inspired by the city’s rich traditions\, the people he met\, the objects he encountered\, and the landscapes he explored. \nWalking through Kyoto—a city deeply rooted in culture and history—he experienced its unique scenery\, everyday life\, and meaningful encounters. Each interaction and experience gradually took shape as an illustration\, with individual moments connecting to form a larger narrative.
