José Picayo is a New York City based Artist working in both photography and textiles. He began his work in NYC as a photographer in the 1980’s. He has had many solo photography exhibits and has contributed to several group shows in NYC. Recently, he exhibited a retrospective of his Polaroid work at the Erie Art Museum, which was also featured in NYC. José has taught both photography and weaving in New York. In the past several years, he has focused more on textiles and has had this work included in group shows. José is currently working on his first multi-medium solo show that will feature both photography and textiles, to be exhibited at the Robin Rice Gallery in NYC.

This workshop is part of the Textile Arts Center residency at the Ace Hotel Brooklyn during December and January. The Textile Arts Center at Ace Hotel Brooklyn re(creates) some of the studio facilities of TAC’s studio in Gowanus to provide an inside look into a textile arts studio and a space for learning and experimentation with textile techniques, including demonstrations of weaving, machine knitting and printing. Three artists from the Textile Arts Center’s community will be showcasing their work and practice, and activating the space through demos and workshops: Elaine Shen , Jose Picayo and Olga Joan.

The Textile Arts Center (TAC) was founded in 2009 in Brooklyn, as a resource facility dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of textiles through creative educational programs for youth and adults. At TAC, we aspire to unite the textile community and advocate for the handmade by providing accessible, skills-based classes that reinvigorate engagement with traditional crafts, artist residencies and access to shared textile equipment and facilities.
