PIONEER WORKS PRESENTS: CRIT NIGHT

Ace Hotel Brooklyn and Pioneer Works join in creative arms to foster artistic communities. Crit Night is a seasonal series where Pioneer Works artists-in-residence share works in progress during an intimate evening focused around experimentation and discourse.

May Crit Night will feature three 20 minutes performances in the Atrium with PW Residents and Alumni Le’Andra LeSeur, Lorena Barrera Enciso, and Corrine Jasmin, followed by a casual gathering with drinks and a DJ set by OHYUNG in The Lobby.

The event – 

Visual Arts Resident Le’Andra LeSeur presents a new performance-based reading exploring the act of collapse, Testimony: Sketching Collapse. In this 16-minute performance, the artist will use gesture and voice to oscillate within a space contemplating past, present, and future occurrences of personal and communal collapse.

Visual Arts Resident Alum Lorena Barrera Enciso will show Manos, a short experimental documentary about the lives and experiences of Latin American immigrants working in the service industry of New York City.

March Music Resident Corrine Jasmin will present an intimate performance of new and recently released music. Jasmin’s songwriting is reflective, vast, and sometimes paired with poetry. Her music shares thoughtful narratives that are infused with care, and the performer’s work is experimental in nature.

Music Resident Alum OHYUNG will DJ in the Lobby Bar following the program.

About –

Le’Andra LeSeur is a multidisciplinary artist whose work encompasses a range of media including video, installation, photography, painting, and performance. LeSeur’s body of work, a celebration of Blackness, queerness, and femininity, seeks to dismantle systems of power and achieve transcendence and liberation through perseverance. Through the insertion of her body and voice into her work, she provides her audience with an opportunity to contemplate themes such as identity, family, Black grief and joy, the experience of invisibility, and what it means to take up space as a queer Black woman—a rejection of the stereotypes which attempt to push these identities to the margins.

Lorena Barrera Enciso is a Mexican interdisciplinary artist. Her film work observes the inherent choreography of the body in motion and the sense of longing that is inarticulate and exists without spoken language. Through her experiences as a brown migrant body, she explores the fabrication of identity and invisible labor in the context of the United States. The tactile quality of her work yearns for intimacy and favors exposition methods closer to the warmth of community and alternative to the big screen. However, her work, like her, is a body of many homes. She is currently based in Queens, NY.

Brooklyn-based Corrine Jasmin is a poet, musician, celebrated writer, and multidisciplinary artist creating to cement a Black future.

The powerhouse and dynamic performance artist shared stages with Flo Milli, opening for her Pittsburgh tour stop, and is a back-to-back Brooklyn Poetry Slam Champion. Her music is reflective, vast and experimental in nature. Move Through, her debut single, was accompanied by a self-directed and edited film and followed by (micro) album: Fever Dream Insomniac.

Jasmin has performed around the country and at spaces like BRIC, The Andy Warhol Museum, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, August Wilson Center, and Carnegie Museum of Art. She’s also a former Kelly Strayhorn Theater artist-in-residence.

OHYUNG is an Asian American musician and artist based in Brooklyn. Their first album Untitled (Chinese Man with Flame) was released by Deathbomb Arc. In 2020, OHYUNG released their sophomore album PROTECTOR (Chinabot), an experimental rap cross-genre collision course through distorted 808s, pitch-shifted rapping, frenetic pop energy, and ambient loops. Featured in PAPER and Kaltblut, PROTECTOR was described by Bandcamp as “a fascinating, shape-shifting record.”

They compose music for films and exhibitions as Robert Ouyang Rusli, and their work has been featured at Sundance, BAMCinématek, the Queens Museum, and BAM Next Wave Festival. In 2017, they received a Van Lier Fellowship in Music Composition from the Asian American Arts Alliance.
