Taste Makers with Mayukh Sen and Julie Sahni: Honoring the Culinary Brilliance of Immigrant Women
- 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm | Thursday November 04, 2021
- Demo Kitchen | Ace Hotel Brooklyn
- $15
Join us for an evening with James Beard Award-winning writer Mayukh Sen as we celebrate the launch of his first book, Taste Makers: Seven Immigrant Women Who Revolutionized Food in America.
An intimate portrait of seven brilliant immigrant women and their enduring influence on America’s palate, Taste Makers centers the lives and work of marginalized women. The extraordinary contributions of these women are a powerful rebuke of the accepted canon of “culinary brilliance” that is so often homogeneously privileged and male. Sen—a queer, brown child of immigrants who came to the food world as an outsider—honors immigrant stories, questioning dominant culinary narratives that equate assimilation to success. In doing so, he dares to ask: What motivated these women to cook? Who gets to dictate whose food is worthy of celebration? And what can this history tell us about the state of the food world today?
Moderated by cookbook author and Brooklyn Delhi co-founder Chitra Agrawal, Sen will joined in conversation by Julie Sahni, an award-winning cooking teacher, cookbook author and chef, and one of the two surviving book subjects featured in Taste Makers.
Signed copies of Taste Makers are available from our partner bookstore, Kitchen Arts & Letters for purchase with your ticket or at the event. If you order a book with your ticket, you will be able to retrieve it at the event.
This is an in-person event. Tickets must be purchased online in advance. Tickets will not be available for purchase at the door.
You must show photo ID and proof of COVID vaccine to attend this event.
