SPATIAL AWARENESS is a layered multimedia exhibition that explores interior worlds, mythologies, navigational tools, and resistance strategies of African diasporic origins. Featuring new works created while in residence at Ace Hotel New York, SPATIAL AWARENESS draws upon Santana’s written observations in addition to personal photographs captured during walks through Brooklyn and sourced from family archives to explore the intuitive link between the material and spiritual realms. Photographic images, patterns, and marks are layered and sequenced into cartographic forms that
evoke the subversive methods of survival necessitated by both recent American history and our current reality.

Stephanie Santana constructs mixed media textile works and print editions that explore interior worlds, mythologies, navigational tools, and resistance strategies of African diasporic origins. Rooted in the responsive encounter with archival material while engaging with the languages of quilting, printmaking, painting, and collage; her practice
seeks to unearth useful information and alternative spaces of self-definition.

Powerhouse Arts (PHA) is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. The organization offers art fabrication programs for ceramic, print and public art, as well as space for communal education and events. The facility is also
home to MGC Community Print Studio, nonprofit decorative arts fabrication shop The Alpha Workshops, and architectural metal design fabrication firm Workspace11. The building also houses multi-use facilities for education, events, and public engagement.
