Hand Appliqué Workshop with Sarah Nsikak

  • 11:00 am - 1:00 pm | Sunday February 12, 2023
  • The Loft Suite |

Appliqué is straight forward in name as it is the application of one textile to another. It is a dynamic practice that begins in ancient Egypt where it was utilized in the making of ceremonial garments and flags. African countries have been creating appliquéd textile works for sacred traditional banners and to communicate across tribes, establishing symbols for community.

There are many ways to appliqué and many uses for each method, merging art with utility. In this workshop, you will learn three approachable methods of hand appliqué work and leave with a new skill that will apply to mending, quilting, and creating in a special way.

About

This  Hand Appliqué workshop is a celebration of Sarah’s exhibition in The Gallery at Ace Hotel New York – Luck Comes Before Love.

Sarah Nsikak is a Nigerian-American artist and designer living the Hudson Valley of New York and working out of her Brooklyn studio. She is the founder and creative director of La Réunion, a womenswear brand that uses strictly deadstock, antique, and vintage fabrics from around the world to craft its signature clothing pieces. La Réunion draws from many influences including the vibrant stories of the African diaspora, post colonial art and photography, reclaimed beauty, identity, color, joy, and inviting oneself back to what’s been central all along. These are also amongst the themes that she applies in her fine art practice, using applique and patchworking to create folkloric tapestries.
