Mari Mac Dowell presents: Solid Groves with Gavilan Rayna Russom

  • 7:00 pm - 12:00 am | Friday February 25, 2022
  • Lobby | Ace Hotel New York

Tired of being on earth, we collected sounds from all over the world and planned an out of space escape. A weekly phenomenon, orchestrated by the one and only Mari Mac Dowell.

This week, Mari invites Gavilán Rayna Russom, an interdisciplinary artist based in New York City.

Over the past two decades she has produced a complex and compelling body of creative output that fuses theory with expression, nightlife with academia and spirituality with everyday life. Rayna’s renowned prowess with analog and digital synthesizers as composing instruments locates itself within her larger vision of synthesis; an artistic method of weaving together highly differentiated strands of information and creative material into cogent expressive wholes.  The central thread of this practice is the exploration of liminality as a healing agent, a phenomenon she has been engaged with since childhood and has researched at an astounding depth.  Her work is cumulative and experiential.  It requires time and attention to take in, and it powerfully rewards those who bring their time and attention to it. In March of 2020 Rayna founded Voluminous Arts, a creative network for supporting and disseminating works by boundary pushing artists.

DJ and record collector for over 15 years, Mari Mac Dowell born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, now resides in Brooklyn, NY, where for almost five years she has been expanding her collection of obscure brazilian and african records, jazz, house and other eccentric noises. Her sets are always energetic with a lot of synthesizers and percussive grooves. Mari became a regular in the booth of a few underground clubs and venues in the city such as Mood Ring, Jupiter Disco, Public Records and ACE Hotel Manhattan & Brooklyn. Inveterate music researcher she is always looking for hidden gems to elevate you to other frequencies.

Chévere Salsa’s Golden Era, a Visual Language at Gallery

The late 1960s through the mid-’70s was a period of renaissance for the Puerto Rican community of New York City. This exhibition pays homage to the visual language used in record designs, posters and other cultural artifacts developed during salsa’s golden era. Chévere…
