Performance Space New York presents: Into an Isle by Gerardo Gonzalez

Exhibition: August 1- October 28

Opening Reception: August 23, 7-9pm

Gerardo Gonzalez, a California native, is an artist who intertwines cultural heritage, and gastronomy to create a singular tapestry of creativity.

Inspired by his Mexican heritage and California upbringing, he reimagines the status quo through flavors, performance and ways we commune. For this inaugural residency, Gonzalez creates time and site specific capsules, harvesting plants and flora from neighborhoods throughout the Boroughs of New York City. An attempt to embody the flavor of each site, the installation celebrates the distinctiveness and abundance of each location.

The result is a celebration, where art and community intertwine, a space where every voice can thrive.

Ace Artist in Residence is the embodiment of our deep conviction that artists deliver us a critical lens through which to understand the world and ourselves. Through the program, we turn our rooms into studio spaces and invite arts organizations to take residency at the hotel and present work in The Gallery. Read all about Ace past residencies here.

Ace Hotel New York invited Performance Space New York to curate the lineup of participating artists.

Over the last 40 years, Manhattan-based Performance Space has been propelling cultural, theoretical and political discourse forward. Futurity and world-building connect the interdisciplinary works they present — works that dissolve the borders of performance art, dance, theater, music, visual art, poetry and prose, ritual, nightlife, food, flm and technology, shattering artistic and social norms alike.

The artists invited for the residency all work to help identify and showcase the potentialities and alternative forms of social coexistence that invisible cultures (such as microbes, bacterias, mycelial networks) and almost forgotten forms of Ancient knowledge provide. Their focus is on Art as a collective healing process on both  a social and biological level.

Residency artists: Gerardo Gonzalez, SJ Norman, Keioui Keijaun Thomas, Richard Kennedy.
