- 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm | Monday December 13, 2021
- The Garden | Ace Hotel Brooklyn
- 252 Schermerhorn Street
Join textile artist and designer, and TAC Artists in Residence alum, Elaine Shen to learn more about her work and practice, including demonstrations of knitting machine techniques and a hands-on exploration of filet crochet, a lace technique.
Elaine Shen (she/her) is a textile artist and maker from the San Francisco Bay Area, currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work investigates the complex nature of love relationships and expressions of care in the context of the places in which we grew up and the cultures and family dynamics that shape our paradigms. She utilizes grid structures to reflect on order and chaos and the power of opposites and employs a range of textile techniques including machine knitting, crocheting, knotting and netting, stitching, and printing. Elaine holds a BFA in textiles from Rhode Island School of Design.
The Textile Arts Center at Ace hotel re(creates) some of the studio facilities of TAC’s studio in Gowanus to provide an inside look into a textile arts studio and a space for learning and experimentation with textile techniques, including demonstrations of weaving, machine knitting and printing. Three artists from the Textile Arts Center’s community will be showcasing their work and practice, and activating the space through demos and workshops.
The Textile Arts Center (TAC) was founded in 2009 in Brooklyn, as a resource facility dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of textiles through creative educational programs for youth and adults. At TAC, we aspire to unite the textile community and advocate for the handmade by providing accessible, skills-based classes that reinvigorate engagement with traditional crafts, artist residencies and access to shared textile equipment and facilities.

An enchanted oyster lies in the ocean with aquatic creatures and flora. A hanging abstract, bioplastic jellyfish illuminates an underwater world, a forest where hybrid amphibians and fairies tend to the changed planet. Caroline questions what the future can look like in a world where nature…
