Emma Kohlmann: “A Chained Heart to a Star”

We’re excited to welcome Emma Kohlmann as our second Artist in Residence (A!R) at Ace Kyoto. Originally from NYC and based in Western Massachusetts, Kohlmann’s work flows through painting, drawing, and watercolor, with influences from mythology, folk art, and DIY culture. Known for her emotive style, she reinterprets historic themes with a fresh, optimistic touch. Represented by Silke Lindner in NYC and V1 Gallery in Copenhagen, her work is also in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.
Project Overview:
During her first Kyoto visit, Kohlmann will transform our gallery walls with large-scale watercolors inspired by the city’s colors and spirit. Mounted with magnets, her mural will evolve daily, layering reflections of Kyoto into an immersive journey.
Artist’s Statement:
Emma’s art builds on organic rhythms and life’s subtle connections—curves of plants, faces in leaves, spirals in shells. Her work, a blend of watercolor and sumi ink, reflects a quiet curiosity about life’s interconnectedness.
