THE WEATHER A KG+ photo exhibition by Lane Diko

「Kyotographie」の一環である「KG+」にて発表される「The Weather」と名付けられた、京都を拠点に活動するアメリカ人アーティスト Lane Diko の写真展。京都の古典的な風景には、至る所に線がある。土塀に描かれた横線は、お寺や神社、御所の外壁にあり、線の数が多いほど歴史的に皇室とのつながりが深いことを示している。雨や天候によって描かれた線は、風化という時の流れ、その永続性と儚さを検証する展示です。

展示について
土壁に引かれた横線。これらは京都のいたるところで見られ、訪れる人も住む人も特に目を止めない。横線のある土壁は寺や神社、御所の外壁に見られ、3本や4本の線がある寺もあるが、皇室の人々が務めてきた門跡寺院の壁には5本の線が描かれており、皇室との歴史的なつながりが深いことが示される。写真家のレーン・ディコにとって、これらの横線は歴史的意義とはまた別に、神秘的な美しさを持っている。文字通り、天候によって描かれたイメージだ。時間、雨、繰り返される夏と冬、左官職人の技が共に生み出す、自然の形を思わせる抽象的なモチーフ。それは、遠くに遠ざかる山々、雨に覆われた森、霧のかかった海や雲の景色などを彷彿させる。これらのイメージには、永続性と儚いものとの緊張関係—ラインの優雅な完璧さは数学的かつ抽象的、プラトンの理想、五線譜を思い起こさせるのに対し、時間と自然の忍び寄る風格は人によりデザインされたものをゆっくりと風化させ、最終的には消し去ってしまう—が 存在する。 

 レーン・ディコ：京都在住のフォトグラファー。プラット・インスティテュートで絵画と写真を学び、ニューヨークを拠点に活動。彼の作品はVSCOで特集され、最近ではEVギャラリー（ニューヨーク）やKG+のターミナルKYOTOで展示された。ライター、写真家、編集者として京都ジャーナルに定期的に寄稿している。

この展覧会の写真は、23AFスタジオによってアワガミ楮和紙に印刷された。

The Weather, an exhibition by Kyoto-based American photographer Lane Diko, examines the passage of time via images of Kyoto’s historic walls. In these photos, rain and mold have formed compositions over horizontal lines that signify the buildings’ imperial status. Presented by KG+, part of the Kyotographie photo festival.

About the exhibition
Horizontal lines on an earthen wall. Throughout the city of Kyoto, these lines are so ubiquitous as to go unnoticed by visitors and residents alike. Found on the outer walls of temples, some shrines, and the Imperial Palace, they indicate close historical ties to the Imperial family. Some temples have three or four lines, but the walls of monzeki jiin, where members of the Imperial family have served, are decorated with five. For the photographer Lane Diko, they have a mysterious beauty separate from their historical significance.  They are images which were literally painted by the weather. Time and rain and summers and winters have collaborated with the sakancraftsmen to create these abstract motifs which resemble natural forms: mountains receding into the distance or forests enshrouded in rain, misty seas or cloudscapes. There is a tension in these images between permanence and ephemerality: the elegant perfection of the lines—mathematical and abstract, a Plationic ideal, recalling a musical staff—and the creeping patina of time and nature—slowly weathering and eventually erasing what we have designed.

Lane Diko has been living and photographing in Kyoto for over a decade. His work has been featured by VSCO and have been most recently exhibited at EV Gallery (NYC) and The Terminal KYOTO for KG+. He is a regular contributor to Kyoto Journal as a writer, photographer, and editor. He was previously based in New York City, where he studied painting and photography at The Pratt Institute.

The photographs in this exhibition were printed by 23AF Studio on Awagami kozo washi paper.
