Multi-instrumentalist and Grammy award-winning Nicholas Payton is gracing our stage (and our ears) with a night of post-modern New Orleans music, what he terms Black American Music. Join us for Nicholas Payton’s showcase on April 28 during Six of Saturns.

As a leading voice in American popular music, the Grammy Award-winning Nicholas Payton is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, producer, arranger, essayist, and social activist who defies musical and artistic categories. All the while, he honors the tradition of what he terms “postmodern New Orleans music,” as well as the spirit of Black American Music, of which he states, “There are no fields, per se. There are lineages.”

The New Orleans-born Payton has followed his calling since growing up under the tutelage of his parents — acclaimed bassist Walter Payton and Maria Payton, a pianist and vocalist. Already a prodigy before entering the first grade, he began playing trumpet at age four and started performing professionally at age 10. Before the age of 20, he was already in demand by everyone from Danny Barker and Clark Terry to Elvin Jones and Marcus Roberts. Payton released his first album, From this Moment, in 1995 on the famed Verve label. He received his first Grammy nomination in 1997 for the album Doc Cheatham & Nicholas Payton, and for the category of Best Instrumental Solo, which found him winning the award that year.

Now, Nicholas Payton is showcasing a new album “Drip,” a new take on six previously recorded original compositions. The result is a raw and soulful, but precise, execution of ideas, plied by masters of the format. Drummer and producer Lil’ John Roberts, a veteran of tours with artists including Janet Jackson and Stevie Wonder, adds a polished, lilting funk throughout the album that particularly buoys “Big George” and “Gold Dust Black Magic,” songs that have been mainstays of Payton’s live sets in recent years.

Jazz Brunch in Josephine Estelle at Josephine Estelle

We think a good brunch should go something like a jazz quartet. Pancakes ground you like the walking bass, egg yolks coat your palate like the lush sounds of a grand piano, coffee adds some mid-morning rhythm, and the citrus brightens the mood like a sting from a horn. Josephine Estelle offers weekend brunch from 8am to 3pm with Or Shovaly creating a soundscape to make your morning that much better.
