Mimicry by Scottie | Artist Gallery Opening Reception

  • 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm | Thursday April 27, 2023
  • Ace Hotel New Orleans | Ace Hotel New Orleans
  • 600 Carondelet St

Where do we go when we dream? – Black women are the forefront and the backbone of community and progression, with this strength comes constant awareness. We must be tuned in for our safety, the safety of our children and those we choose to nurture, love, and protect. We are ever present in reality, rooted in tangibility, and grounded in what lies in front of us. Ask a Black woman about her dreams and see how often they are actually aspirations. They are often the result of work or ambition.. Or skillfully navigating the limitations imposed on us. But what happened to the parts of us that existed before we materialized here, on this plane? When we were free to dream of our beauty and magic. Through photography, written word, graphic and set design, Scottie, strives to create images of Black women that invite both subject and viewer, to transcend the space and time we currently occupy and encourage them to feel.

Scottie’s exhibition at Ace Hotel New Orleans Gallery is on view from April 27, 2023 – July 15, 2023.

About Scottie

Multi-disciplinary artist and educator with over 15 years of experience with photography and other mediums,  Scottie. has dedicated her artistic career to photographing Black women of the southeast, primarily based in Louisiana. Her photography pulls inspiration from the lighting styles in Rembrandt and Joshua Renoyld’s paintings,  the fantastical depictions of women in the works of Alphonse Mucha and Thomas Francis Dicksee, and the authenticity seen in Carrie Mae Weems’ photography. Often, styling elements are handmade, including crowns and headpieces. Large cuts of fabric are pinned to create distinct drapery over the models, highlighting their sensuality. It is her artistic pursuit to create an archive of Black women as proof of their softness, vulnerability, and overwhelming beauty.

Jazz Brunch in Josephine Estelle at Josephine Estelle

We think a good brunch should go something like a jazz quartet. Pancakes ground you like the walking bass, egg yolks coat your palate like the lush sounds of a grand piano, coffee adds some mid-morning rhythm, and the citrus brightens the mood like a sting from a horn. Josephine Estelle offers weekend brunch from 8am to 3pm with Or Shovaly creating a soundscape to make your morning that much better.
