Slow Series | Slow Storytelling with Out of Eden Walk

『OUT OF EDEN WALK (アウト・オブ・エデン・ウォーク/人類の旅路を歩く)』と称して ポール・サロペック氏は 最初の人類が歩いた道を、自分の歩幅で歩いて旅している。気候変動から技術革新まで、現代の主要なストーリーを取材し、そこに暮らす人々の声を日々伝えている。ポールの38,000キロの旅は、10年にわたるスロージャーナリズムの実験である。『アウト・オブ・エデン・ウォーク』のウォーキングの中で、彼は京都を中継し、ここ、エースホテル京都でウォーキング・パートナーの写真家の郡山総一郎氏とともに強い印象を残す物語の探し方や、キーパーソンの描き方、物語の焦点の定め方、そして地域に根ざしながらも普遍的なテーマの見つけ方について、実践を交えて教えるマスタークラスを開催。

リポーター、フォトグラファー、ノンフィクションライター、映像作家、イラストレーター、ポッドキャスター、データビジュアライザー、ラジオプロデューサーなど、あらゆる分野で活躍するプロや学生の方が対象です。定員は20名で、参加者はノートパソコンやメモ帳をご持参ください。時間が許す限り、サロペック氏と郡山氏が参加者の作品についてもアドバイスを行います。マスタークラス は日本語と英語で行われ、通訳も付きます。

講師プロフィール
ポール・サロペックは、ナショナルジオ グラフィック エクスプローラーであり、アフリカを旅立った最初の人類の足跡をたどる『アウト・オブ・エデン・ウォーク』という15年にわたるプロジェクトを進行中です。これまで50カ国以上でジャーナリストとして活躍し、文化や政治、移民、環境、戦争といったテーマに深く迫ってきました。写真家の郡山総一郎氏 は、東京を拠点に活動するドキュメンタリーフォトグラファーで、紛争、環境、社会問題に焦点を当てた長編ビジュアルストーリーに取り組んでいます。

マスタークラスの合間には、PIOPIKOやホテル内のStumptown Coffeeでドリンクを購入できる休憩時間も設けています。水は無料で提供します。

Today’s fast-paced and hyper-connected media provide us with an endless supply of instant yet shallow information. What’s often missing in our increasingly unfocused world is depth, nuance, and–most of all–meaning in the news stories we consume. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Paul Salopek and veteran documentary photographer Soichiro Koriyama will be sharing lessons gleaned from decades of reporting across the globe on how to build complex, emotionally rich, and immersive human narratives through the practice of  “slow storytelling.” Salopek and Koryama will lead a masterclass on how to identify powerful stories, profile key characters, clarify narrative focus, and choose local themes that have universal appeal and scope. This immersive storytelling masterclass has space for 20 aspiring and working professionals across all disciplines and media: reporters, photographers, non-fiction writers, film documentarians, graphic illustrators, podcasters, data visualizers, radio producers, and students from any field that could benefit from applying storytelling tools. Attendees should bring laptops or notepads for note-taking. Salopek and Koriyama will be available to discuss participants’ work, as time permits. The masterclass  will be bilingual Japanese/English and a translator will be provided.

About the instructors: Paul Salopek is a National Geographic Explorer who is leading the Out of Eden Walk, a 15-year storytelling trek  across the globe in the footsteps of the first humans who dispersed out of Africa during the Stone Age. He has worked as a journalist in more than 50 countries, producing in-depth projects on culture, politics, migration, the environment, and war. Soichiro Koriyama is a Tokyo-based documentary photographer who specializes in long-form visual stories on conflict, the environment and social issues.

*There will be drink breaks during the masterclass where attendees can purchase a drink from PIOPIKO or from Stumptown Coffee located in the hotel. Water will be provided.
