We asked McSweeney’s to curate five artists for April. They came back with six, and the sixth was Leanne Shapton —so they kinda had us right where they wanted us. Leanne came by with her young one, Tomi, and together they made colorful prints by dipping pickles and cheese from our room service menu in paint:
Leanne Shapton is an illustrator, artist, author and publisher based in New York City. She is the co-founder, with photographer Jason Fulford, of J&L Books, an internationally-distributed not-for-profit imprint specializing in art and photography books. Shapton has interned and worked for many great institutions and individuals: SNL, Harper’s Magazine, James McMullan, the National Post, Elle magazine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and more. In 2006 she published Was She Pretty?, and in 2009, Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris including Books, Street Fashion and Jewelry, both with Sarah Crichton Books / Farrar, Straus & Giroux.
Her illustrated books, The Native Trees of Canada and Sunday Night Movies were published with Drawn & Quarterly in 2010 and 2013. In 2012 Shapton published Swimming Studies with Blue Rider Press. It won the 2012 National Book Critic’s Circle Award for autobiography. Shapton recently published the bestseller Women In Clothes with Sheila Heti and Heidi Julavits, in September 2014. Her first children’s book, Toys Talking, will come out in May 2016.
Ace AIR this April is curated by McSweeney’s —a publishing company based in San Francisco. As well as operating a daily humor website, it publishes Timothy McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern, the Believer, and an ever-growing selection of books under various imprints.
