Shogo Misumi from Bounjour Records journeys through the sonic plane

Shogo Misumi

The art of listening is a lot like drawing a map. A knowing ear can translate a song into a vehicle, serpentining its way across the sonic plane and finding its way through. Shogo Misumi of Bonjour Records — the Tokyo-born cultural and lifestyle retailer — took us on an auditory expedition with some of his favorite threads, magazines and sounds, below.

Great ears think alike — Bonjour Records prepares to open a new shop in Kyoto, Japan as we gird ourselves for our soon-to-be new home in the city, too. As a follow-up to a two-hour Kyoto-inspired playlist that was created exclusively for the Ace Hotel London Shoreditch Lobby, Shogo’s answers, plus the track list for our new favorite ear-worms, can be found below.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

SM:
My name is Shogo Misumi, born in 1988, working for Bonjour Records in Japan for 8 years as well as 2 years for Maison Kitsuné.

What is your favourite thing about London?

SM:

Ballroom: 5 Things with Function

Launched last year, FUNCTION is a Toronto-based platform for everything Ballroom: culture, stories, events and education. Recently, they brought Ballroom royalty through our doors for our collaborative “Class of ’23” sessions, an ongoing series centering sexual health, community and movement. We gathered monthly to talk about history, sex ed and the courageous creative expression of voguing, as led by four of Ballroom's most influential figures. Archiving Australia with Efficient Space

Michael is the head honcho at Efficient Space, the Melbourne-based record label responsible for outfitting Ace Sydney with a treasure trove of a vinyl library and for archiving and re-releasing obscure, ahead-of-its-time Australian music. At Efficient Space, the mission isn’t burn fast but bright, but rather driven by the careful, occasionally tedious and always time-consuming work of preservation. “Most of the projects we’re uncovering maybe wouldn't happen if we didn’t instigate it, and that’s the motivation,” Michael says.
