Boxed In: An Exhibit by Corey Walsh and Malik Roberts

This exhibit gives a look into all the boxes we are placed in/ place ourselves in—identities, expectations, routines, institutions, and beliefs—and asks us to consider how those structures provide safety, and how they can stifle us or create limitations. As an artist, creating and mastering a signature style is every artist’s goal. What happens when that style becomes limiting? When the fear of not being received well makes stepping outside the box to a new style or medium discouraging?

The question —“Which boundaries protect you, and which ones have become too small?”—is intentionally open-ended. It does not imply that every boundary should be broken or that complete freedom is always desirable. Instead, it invites reflection on whether the frameworks that organize one’s life still fit their current circumstances.
