SLOW SERIES : Sashiko Workshop with JunAle

  • All Day | Saturday July 18, 2026 - Tuesday July 21, 2026
  • | Ace Hotel Kyoto
  • Free

As part of Ace Hotel Kyoto’s SLOW SERIES, we are hosting a Sashiko workshop with artist JunAle.
Sashiko is a traditional Japanese hand-stitching technique used to repair and reinforce fabric, passed down through generations as a way to extend the life of clothing and textiles.
In this workshop, participants will bring clothing, bags, or small textile items and learn basic Sashiko techniques for mending and reinforcement. Materials made from repurposed Ace Hotel Kyoto roomwear will also be available to use.
Items with holes or damage are welcome, as well as pieces you simply want to repair, strengthen, or give a new look. Participants may also join without bringing anything.
A hands-on session focused on simple stitching and working with what you already have.

*No items required.

Jun Sugimae

Born in Osaka, Japan in 1983.

After studying tailoring at a fashion school, he moved to London, where he gained experience in a variety of creative fields, including work as a brand assistant and costume production for stage performances. Upon returning to Japan in 2006, he began his career as a sportswear designer. While working with cutting-edge materials and functional design, he also developed a deep interest in traditional craftsmanship passed down through generations.

Since 2014, he has focused on the centuries-old Japanese stitching technique known as sashiko, establishing a unique practice that combines repair and embellishment using only needle and thread on contemporary products such as sneakers and mountain parkas.

He became the first artist in the world to apply sashiko stitching to sneaker soles, expanding the possibilities of the technique into new territory. His work, which bridges traditional craft and modern products, has inspired many contemporary creators.

In addition to stitching, he also works with natural dyes such as indigo and persimmon tannin, hand-dyeing both sashiko thread and the sneakers themselves. From material preparation to final finishing, his process is rooted entirely in handcraftsmanship.

By reinterpreting tradition through a contemporary lens, he continues to explore and expand the future potential of sashiko.

Concept of JunAle

JunAle is a creative artisanal studio led by sashiko artist Jun Sugimae, dedicated to redefining the boundary between craft and product design.

Since beginning his sashiko practice in 2014, Sugimae has focused on reinterpreting traditional techniques through a contemporary lens, creating new value by connecting disciplines that would not traditionally intersect.

SASHIKOSNEAKER™ is an art piece that embodies this philosophy.

The concept of BORO / SASHIKO / TECH represents three core elements of the practice: continuity, craftsmanship, and creativity. BORO reflects the accumulation and circulation of time, SASHIKO represents handcraft through repair and reinforcement, and TECH expresses a perspective toward contemporary materials, functionality, and structure.

Rather than treating tradition as something fixed in the past, JunAle proposes the idea of “FOLKLORISM” — an ongoing practice of reconstructing, expanding, and passing tradition into the future through a modern perspective.

BORO / SASHIKO / TECH

Reflect To Project: Multimedia Installation at Gallery

Reflect to Project is a collaborative installation by Brooklyn-based artists Cat McCabe and Olivia Restivo that examines how we evolve through the layered forces that shape us — familial patterns, political environments, inherited trends, personal transformation, and the constant cycle of rebirth. Blending mixed media, photography, textiles, sound, and symbolic objects, the installation spans multiple senses: visual, tactile, auditory, and emotional. Each piece acts as a portal into a different facet of evolution — from the stories we inherit to…
