Them Handy Sisters: An A!R Exhibition By Sultana Isham

Sultana Isham joins us for the month of October as our Q4 artist-in-residence. She explores sound as biology through composition and ethnomusicology. She is an award-winning composer, violinist, scholar and interdisciplinary fellow at The Sundance Institute and her recent score for the Emmy-nominated documentary, “The Neutral Ground,” premiered at Tribeca Film Festival and earned her an IDA nomination for best score in 2021. In 2023 she made her composer/conductor debut with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and her upcoming score for the docu-series, “Stax Records,” directed by Jamila Wignot will broadcast nationally on HBO in 2024. She’ll be displaying a sonic-based archival exhibition on the lives and works of performers-musicologists, Dr. Geneva Handy Southall and D. Antoinette Handy, in collaboration with their descendants, that will be on display from November through the end of the year. Join us for the opening night on November 17 from 6-9pm to explore the lives of them Handy sisters.
