BEYOND SAKE by Cindy Bissig
- All Day | Wednesday April 01, 2026 - Thursday April 30, 2026
- | Ace Hotel Kyoto
- Free
From April 1 through April 30, 2026, Ace Hotel Kyoto’s Gallery will present an exhibition by Beyond Sake, a long-term photographic project by Japan-based sake professional and writer-photographer Cindy Bissig. The project documents craft communities through an intimate focus on sake breweries and the people who sustain them. By observing daily labor, shared environments, and the transmission of knowledge across generations, the work highlights the collective life behind sake production. Through this perspective, Beyond Sake offers insight into a living cultural practice that continues to evolve while remaining deeply rooted in Japanese tradition.

Cindy Bissig is a Swiss photographer and writer based in Kyoto, Japan, with her work rooted in visual storytelling, documenting people, places, and cultural contexts across Japan and beyond.
With a professional background spanning more than 20 years in international hospitality and tourism, Cindy brings a broad, experience-based perspective to her photographic and editorial practice. Her images and writing reflect close engagement with local environments and everyday life. She works within existing light and environments, observing rather than directing, and allowing scenes to unfold as they are. The resulting photographs are grounded in presence, documenting life as it unfolds, with a strong focus on perspective, texture, and spatial relationships.
Alongside her photography, Cindy contributes regularly to international publications, including Travel + Leisure, producing both written features and photographic content. Her practice bridges editorial storytelling and long-term personal projects, with photography remaining central to how she observes, records, and communicates lived environments.
