For the Culture: Phenomenal Black Women & Femmes in Food – By Klancy Miller

New York based chef, writer and founder of For the Culture food magazine, Klancy Miller is coming to Ace Hotel DTLA in celebration of her new book. For the Culture: Phenomenal Black Women & Femmes in Food, is a personal love letter to, and in celebration of, Black women and femmes in food and wine, featuring 66 interviews, 47 recipes from interviewees, and 5 essays honoring culinary matriarchs through the decades. One of the only books to exclusively highlight Black women and femmes in food and wine, For the Culture shares an intimate look into the backgrounds, careers and wisdom of icons, innovators and creatives like Edna Lewis, B. Smith, Leah Chase, Lena Richard, and more.

Join Klancy and friends Fabienne Toback & Karis Jagger (Producers of ‘High on the Hog’) for an evening of conversation on inspiration, Black women and hospitality in celebrating the launch of her new book.

Books will be available by Now Serving.

Klancy Miller 

A longtime New Yorker, Klancy graduated from Columbia University, and earned her diplôme de pâtisserie from Le Cordon Bleu Paris. As an author and writer, Klancy has had her work in outlets like The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vogue, Food52, among others, and she’s been honored as a 2022 IACP Trailblazer Awards Winner. In 2016, she released her debut cookbook Cooking Solo: The Fun of Cooking For Yourself, which was selected as an Amazon Editors Pick, and in 2021, she launched the annual magazine, For the Culture: A Magazine Celebrating Black Women and Femmes in Food and Wine. The first issue, graced by Dr. Jessica B. Harris on the cover, sold out within 24 hours. Her new book is an evolution of the magazine and created to be a resource – one that Klancy wishes she had when starting her career in food.

Fabienne Toback and Karis Jagger

Writers/Producers – Fabienne Toback and Karis Jagger are award-winning producers and longtime friends who share a passion for food and film. They began collaborating in 2011, producing and directing a series of shorts for The New York Times. Their most recent celebrated success, the High on the Hog documentary series (Netflix, 2021) was greenlit for a second season. It was awarded a Peabody Award, NAACP Image Award, and AAFCA Award for Best Documentary Series in 2022. The series is inspired by the eponymous work of Dr. Jessica Harris and chronicles the vibrant and interconnected history of Black foodways in the United States. The series is part of Toback and Jagger’s deeply rooted commitment to communicate social justice and awareness and to highlight stories that need a deeper telling. Jagger is a UK-raised Yale graduate and award-winning philanthropist, co-founding the nonprofit, Baby2Baby. She began her film career in documentaries before moving into feature film production. Toback, a New York City native, has worked in all aspects of the entertainment business, from production to studio development, as a director/ producer and Executive Producer. They are currently developing documentary and narrative projects exploring food, science, and female narratives.
