The Infinity of Australia
A moment for our first home Down Under
The cinematic color palette of Australia’s landscapes has long painted our dreams. It’s a place where the surreal is the real, and there is spark because of it. Surry Hills is a distillation of the country’s legendary creative tenacity, from the neighborhood’s razor gang wars and underground liquor trade of the 1920s and ’30s to the modernist art boom of the 1960s through to the Gay Solidarity Group protests of the 1970s. The spot has served as home to the most trailblazing voices of modern Australia, Brett Whiteley and Kenneth Slessor among them.
Ace Hotel Sydney is built upon this legacy, literally: beneath it all lies the country’s first ceramic kiln discovery. The building is a reimagination of the historic Tyne House — which at one point served as dispensary and warehouse for a storied Australian pharmacist — tenderly restored and later outfitted by Flack Studio. We have a neighborhood restaurant named LOAM near The Lobby, as well as a day-to-night bar and cafe called Good Chemistry. Rooftop restaurant is on the way. There’s a sunken lounge and a playful and no-holds-barred art program featuring works by artists at the forefront of contemporary Australian art, including Tony Albert, Nadia Hernández and Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran. We consider it all a fine match for the verve of Surry Hills. The whole place is made up of the kaleidoscopic warmth that drew us here to begin with. And now you can feel it too.
Ace Hotel acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the Traditional Custodians of this land. As one of the oldest living cultures on earth, we celebrate their age-old connections to Country along with the knowledge, determination, patience and generosity of all First Nations people. Past, present and future, this is Aboriginal land.
